Fast burnt sugar dessert
Sometimes you need a sweet and custardy pick-me-up to liven up your day. Well, then let me introduce you to the fast burnt sugar dessert! This dessert is so simple, and it requires very few tools and skills.
You need one bowl, one oven-safe pot, and only four ingredients to make this dish come to life. And trust me, once you taste it, it will become a regular in your household. It is also an excellent dessert to make when you have short-notice guests. The recipe takes about 30–40 minutes, and your house will smell amazing when your guests arrive!
In my family, this is one of the sweetest desserts we make, so it’s not an every-day dessert. We normally make this when we accidentally buy too much milk or if we have eggs that are about to go bad. Or, you know, ’cause we want to!
For me, this is childhood in a bowl, but for some people, the custardy texture takes getting used to. The texture is like a chunky crème brûlée.
Get your ingredients ready, and let’s make ourselves some fast burnt sugar dessert!

minutes“Burnt sugar” dessert, also known as caramel custard or flan, is a timeless classic loved for its creamy texture and rich caramel flavor. This decadent dessert features a luscious custard base made from eggs, milk, and vanilla sugar, perfectly complemented by a sweet caramel sauce. Baked to golden perfection, each spoonful offers a harmonious blend of silky custard and indulgent caramel, making it a delightful treat for any occasion.
Ingredients
4 Whole eggs at room temperature
1 liter whole milk
1 sachet vanilla sugar
270 grams of sugar
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 160 °C (upper and lower heat with a fan). Usually option 2 on the selection screen.
- While the oven is preheating, in a bowl, break the eggs, whisk them, and add the vanilla sugar and 70 grams of sugar. Pour the milk into the bowl, whisk well, and set aside.
- Choose an appropriate pot that is able to fit the whole composition. Put it on medium-low heat, add the remaining 200 grams of sugar, and stir until it melts and turns into a beautiful golden brown liquid.
- Take the pot off the stove and rotate it while the sugar covers the whole bottom of the pot and 3/4 of the sides. A thin layer of melted sugar will suffice.
*Caution: make sure to use proper cooking gloves to handle the pot, as both the pot and the sugar are hot. - Once the sugar coating is done, slowly and carefully add the mix from the bowl. Put the pot in the oven uncovered and cook for about 30–40 minutes, or until you see some brownish spots on top. Best served cold as is or with a topping of your choosing: whipped cream, ice cream, etc.
