Homemade chocolate spread
In the realm of comfort foods, few things rival the creamy, indulgent delight of chocolate spread. Especially if it is homemade chocolate spread. Whether generously slathered on toast, fruit, or straight from the spoon, this delectable treat never fails to bring a smile to our faces. While store-bought versions are readily available, we really love to make our own, and mix and match as we want. Not only is it incredibly easy to make, but the results are also downright irresistible. Join us on a journey into the world of homemade chocolate spread, where simplicity meets decadence. And also, every spoonful becomes a moment of pure bliss.
The science behind the sweetness
Before we delve into the recipe, let’s take a moment to appreciate the science behind this culinary masterpiece. At its core, chocolate spread is a harmonious blend of cocoa powder, sugar, fat, and flavorings. Cocoa powder, derived from roasted cocoa beans, is the star of the show, providing that rich, chocolatey taste we all crave. Sugar adds sweetness and balances the bitterness of cocoa, while fat – typically in the form of butter or oil – lends creaminess and mouthfeel. Fortunately for us, we have found a chocolate bar that we love and that has all the core ingredients. And as we enjoy the mouthfeel and sweetness level, we use the chocolate bar instead of the cocoa, sugar and fat separately. The final ingredients are flavorings like vanilla extract or hazelnut, which add depth and complexity. The flavorings give the homemade chocolate spread a new type of deliciousness. An oomph of flavor!
A few ingredients go a long way
The beauty of homemade chocolate spread lies in its simplicity. With just a handful of ingredients and minimal effort, you can create a decadent treat that far surpasses anything you’ll find on store shelves. Plus, by making it yourself, you have full control over the quality and quantity of each ingredient. And you can ensure that the spread is tailored to your taste buds.
You can also control the thickness of it. In our recipe, you will find instructions on how to make the spread thicker or thinner if you prefer it. If you want, you can also replace the whole milk with a vegan milk as you prefer.

Ingredients
1 can (397 grams) sweetened condensed milk
200 grams milk chocolate
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
3-4 tablespoons whole milk
Directions
- Melt the milk chocolate on a low flame. When fully dissolved, add the vanilla extract and start pouring the condensed milk. When the condensed milk is incorporated, add the milk, stir well, and take off the heat.
Notes
- If you want your spread to be thinner, add more milk. When the spread cools down, it will thicken.
- Do not add all the condensed milk at once; if it is too cold, it might slow the mixing process of the ingredients or ruin your spread.

If you’d like to test out other fast desserts that come together in under 20 minutes, I would recommend: the semolina puffing with cocoa powder or the Fluffy crepes in two ways. By the way, when I make the crepes I ALWAYS make this chocolate sauce as well, they pair up so well!
