Cheesy ham rolls: soft and creamy
Cheesy ham rolls, my favorite of all things fried. Yes, they are not the healthiest of snacks, but they are so gooey and delicious! When we know we have visitors, we usually whip up a batch the day before and cut them into slices right before serving… if there are any left. When we make them, the rolls usually disappear in a few hours. I mean, it’s ham with a light batter and a cheese pull that will make you a winner in any world record! What’s not to like?
Normally, they are great hot, but in my opinion, they taste even better cold. Once fried, they have a golden layer around them, and it just completes them!
We make these cheesy ham rolls on Christmas, and any weekend we crave something gooey. They are also great to bring to a potluck. You can either serve them whole as rolls or cut them into slices to present them as finger food. Either way, this will be the first empty plate of the evening!
My family started making these about 5 years ago. Therefore, I don’t have experience as a kid around them, but I guarantee the little ones can help you. They can either make the batter or help with the rolling, or do any other activity that you see fit. Also, it will make them want to eat them because they helped make them!
By the way, the cheese pick and ham pick are up to you. But if you want my recommendation, I would suggest cheese slices that have a great flavor, like Gouda, Emmental, or Cheddar, and an easy-melting mozzarella type for the very center for the cheese pull!
Get your ingredients ready, and let’s make ourselves some delicious cheesy ham rolls!

Ingredients
10 slices of a round ham
10 slices of a long ham
10 slices of cheese
20 pieces of good melting cheese
2 Eggs
160 grams white flour
1/2 cup white wine
Pinch of salt
Pinch of ground black pepper
20 toothpicks
Neutral oil (sunflower / grape seed) – for cooking
Directions
- Take a longer chopping board where you can assemble the rolls as follows: Place a piece of long ham. From one end to another, place the sliced cheese and cover it with the round ham. Place a piece of the melting cheese at one end. Start rolling, and once the first piece is covered, place the second piece of melting cheese. Use the toothpicks to go through all the hams and cheeses to make them stick together in a roll. Repeat the process for the remaining ham slices. Set aside once all rolls are ready.
- In a bowl, crack the eggs, whisk in the flour, and season with salt and pepper. Whisk until there are no lumps and the consistency is like that of pancakes.
- In a pot, add the oil (the oil should reach 1/2 of a roll’s height) over medium heat. Once the oil is heated, coat 2-3 rolls at a time with the egg mixture and fry them on both sides until golden brown. Place on a cooling rack, and once cooled, remove the toothpicks from all rolls and serve warm.
